THE FIRST AIDER
The term First Aider generally applies to someone who has attended a First Aid at Work course and has successfully passed the final assessment necessary to gain the qualification. To become a First Aider in the workplace you will need to attend and successfully complete the assessment of a Health & Safety Executive approved First Aid course. This qualification is valid for a period of three years. In order to remain qualified you must undergo re-qualification by attending a 2-day refresher course before your qualification lapses.
Many people are often reluctant to administer First Aid treatment because of the fear that they may face legal action if they do something wrong. If you stay within the boundaries of your First Aid training you cannot be held legally responsible for any adverse outcome. Remember, that even with the correct treatment some casualties may not make a full recovery. This is a fact of life and you should not blame yourself. As a First Aider in the workplace you may have a contractual obligation to administer First Aid to other employees and members of the public if your employer identifies this within company's assessment of First aid provision.
